Frequently Asked Questions

Lock Tech Supply is a trusted, dedicated supplier to the hospitality industry. Established in 1986 in Daytona Beach, LTS was focused on hotel hardware and locksets, with the original owner Joseph Salcedo providing locksmith services as well. Remember the large square headed keys with the stamped room number? We were a major provider of those keys and customization back in the day.

Current owner Tim Floyd purchased the business in 2012 and moved it from Daytona Beach to Marietta, GA. By this time, technology had changed and it was decided to focus on expanding key cards for electronic lock systems, and key card holders. We now provide the best quality key cards for over 20 brands and over 10 different lock brands, specializing in RFID lock systems.

We serve professionals in the hotel busness, specifically the Owners, GM's and FDM's for franchised and independent properties in the United States. We take pride as being known by our customers as their knowledgable "key guys". We are proud and thankful for how our customers refer us to friends and peers, knowing we will stand behind what we sell and are interested in a long term relationship based on service.

Our focus is to help property owners and managers control costs related to key cards and key holders.

For our franchisee customers, our job is to make sure they are in compliance with their organization's branding requirements utilizing the specifications and artwork provided by the parent company.

We are also known as the premiere manufacturing group for "small run" production of custom keys and key envelopes, helping independent properties and resorts achieve their branding goals as well.

Starting in 2024, many lock companies are switching their systems from Mifare 1K systems to Ultralight C cards with enhanced encryption. These keys are not compatible with 1K Mifare systems that have been in the market for years, and these ULC keys cost quite a bit more, adding almost 30% to the cost of key cards.

So why would I upgrade? Because like most things today, the 1K systems will not be supported by the lock companies in the future. Also, while our customers do not report cloning of the 1K keys, it is possible to "hack" them resulting in a security risk.

Ultralight C (ULC) chips, with their advanced 3DES encryption, offer enhanced security compared to the older MIFARE Classic chips. However, some hotel staff may notice that the performance of these new chips isn't quite as robust as their predecessors. Here’s a detailed look at why this might be the case and how to navigate these changes effectively.

MIFARE Classic chips have been a staple in hotel key card systems for years. They come with a larger memory capacity, typically available in 1KB and 4KB sizes. This memory is organized into sectors and blocks, providing ample space for data storage and flexible usage. The higher memory capacity allows for storing more data directly on the card, which can include access information, guest preferences, and transaction histories. This leads to faster processing and less frequent data retrieval from the hotel’s central database, ensuring quick and efficient access for guests. The MIFARE Classic chips use the proprietary CRYPTO1 algorithm for authentication. This algorithm is simple and requires lower computational power, resulting in fast processing speeds. This makes the MIFARE Classic ideal for high-traffic environments like hotels, where quick access is crucial to maintaining guest satisfaction. Additionally, these chips are well-integrated into existing hotel infrastructure, and hotel staff are likely very familiar with their operation and troubleshooting. This established familiarity ensures smooth operations with minimal disruptions.

MIFARE Ultralight C, while offering enhanced security with their 3DES (Triple Data Encryption Standard) encryption, come with certain performance trade-offs. These chips have a limited memory size of just 192 bytes, designed for simpler applications with minimal data storage needs. The reduced memory capacity means less data can be stored on the card, necessitating more frequent data transactions with the hotel’s backend systems. This can slow down overall performance, particularly during peak times when many guests are checking in or out simultaneously. The 3DES encryption used by MIFARE ULC chips, although providing vital protection against unauthorized access, requires more complex calculations and additional processing time. This enhanced security adds to the processing time, potentially resulting in slight delays during the authentication process. These delays may be noticeable during busy periods or in high-traffic areas, impacting the overall efficiency of the system.

Integrating MIFARE ULC chips into the existing hotel infrastructure may require updates to both hardware and software systems. Hotel staff may need additional training to adapt to the new system, leading to a temporary learning curve associated with the transition. Initial integration challenges and the need for staff training can impact the system’s efficiency and performance until everyone is fully accustomed to the new technology. While MIFARE ULC chips bring a higher level of security to hotel key card systems, their performance may not match that of the older MIFARE Classic chips due to factors such as limited memory, more complex authentication processes, and increased power and resource demands. Understanding these trade-offs is crucial for hotel staff to manage guest expectations and ensure smooth transitions during the upgrade process. Investing in proper infrastructure upgrades and staff training can mitigate some of these performance issues, allowing hotels to benefit from enhanced security without compromising on efficiency.
